From Cambridge Kitchen to Culinary Icon: Julia Child
Bon Appétit!
This youth-led local history exhibit celebrates the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of Julia Child—chef, author, television pioneer, and Cambridge trailblazer who transformed the way Americans understood cooking and culinary education.
The exhibit was created by the 2026 Civic Designers, a cohort hired through the Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program through a partnership between the Office of City Councilor E. Denise Simmons and the Cambridge Museum of History & Culture.
Over the course of a transformative six-week design studio, Civic Designers conducted historical research, participated in immersive site visits across Cambridge, and collaborated on design work to create an engaging public history experience. Through their exploration of Child’s life and work, the Civic Designers examined her groundbreaking career, including becoming the first person to win an Emmy for an educational television program and the first woman inducted into The Culinary Institute of America’s Hall of Fame.
Guided by museum staff, city partners, and community experts in public history, archiving, storytelling, and the culinary arts, the Civic Designers developed an exhibition that brings Julia Child’s Cambridge story to life. Along the way, they strengthened their skills in research, public speaking, teamwork, design, project management, and culinary arts while connecting Child’s legacy to the present day.

Bon Appétit! From Cambridge Kitchen to Culinary Icon: Julia Child exhibit is a collaborative effort between the Cambridge Museum of History & Culture, the Office of Mayor E. Denise Simmons, the Office of Workforce Development, the Cambridge Historical Commission, the Cambridge Public Library, Carpenters Union Local 328, The Foundry, and Cambridge Crossing.
